Piece of cake
My sister Lara has generously offered to make our wedding cake. This is no small task. She and I have been conversing via AIM and telephone for at least two weeks and at least half of the time we are talking cake talk. There are round cakes, square cakes, sugarpaste cakes, buttercream cakes, ugly cakes, pretty cakes and my personal favorite: inspiring cakes.
For the past three weeks I have changed the way that I eat. I cut out all meat and dairy (except for the occasional clam chowder) and have been going to the gym every other day. I start the day off with a freshly squeezed veggie juice and most of the time I snack on raw foods and homemade hummus. Unfortunately this leaves me in a confusing situation when it comes to cakes. I have been so healthy, and yet I am constantly thinking about cakes.
Ever since Lara and I made my birthday cake for new years I have wanted to bake more cakes. There is something incredibly satisfying about slapping some layers of cake together and covering them with frosting. Decorating is even more fun, with so many interesting designs to be inspired by.
The book we like best so far is the Borders book "The Essential Cookbook Cake Decorating", List Price: $9.99 unfortunately I can't find a link for it online. But you know the ones. Those large Borders brand paperback books that have large photos through out? That’s them. Anyone interested in baking and cake design should really pick this book up. They have amazing children’s cake designs too. Their wedding cakes are actually pretty average looking so we have been getting inspiration from theknot.com and their wedding cake gallery. Martha Stewart has some pretty designs too.
Lara also posted some more photos of her son Miles on her flickr page, so go check out how cute he is!
