Finally crossing the Atlantic

I’m currently full of pre-travel anxiety because this Sunday (drum roll please) I will be headed off to Europe for the very first time. My mother is traveling east to meet me here in Plymouth and then we’re off to Zurich (because of the alps, and some friends), Venice (because it is sinking) and London (because I know I'll love it).

I am also excited to report that I will be taking a lot of photos on this trip because I am told that I will be getting a photo pass for the two Depeche Mode/ The Bravery shows that I am attending. I'll just be working for myself... so if anyone knows a publication that might want to accuire photos of DM in Zurich and Wembly… point them in my direction.

I decided that with such a special photo opportunity coming up that I needed to invest in a longer camera lens. I got myself a Canon 85mm 1:8 at the suggestion of my good friend and extremely talented photographer Sam Bennett.

I got the lens today and I’m really excited, I think it will work wonderfully. I’ll be in “the pit” with god knows how many other photographers snapping away for the first three songs of each artist. I picture myself transferring the shots to my ipod once I get back to my seat. I’m prepared!

So I’ll be out of touch for nearly two weeks. No AIM or compulsive internets surfing will do me some good. I’ll be busy anyway, getting intoxicated on European wine and fancy foods furnished by my generous and adventurous mother.

But OH the pressures of packing! I’ll be gone for so long, and yet I will have no laundry facilities. I basically have to plan out every outfit I am going to wear for those “special occasions” and then make sure not to wear them before their time. I’m going to inspire my own “NERD ALERT” commentary when opening my suitcase to reveal labeled airless ziplock bags containing specific outfits. I have no shame.

Also, before my mom and I jet off she will finally get to meet the other Gantz siblings Jeremy (also my housemate) and Alyssa. This is exciting since I know she will delight in their company as much as I do. Our family is going to expand once Ryan and I tie the knot and I feel so thankful. I love these people.

COOL LENS!!!! I love the fast prime lenses. They are almost all I use. If you can (you may already do this) shoot in RAW. It gives you much more room to play. Have fun.

Yeah, I actually also invested in a 2GB CF card so that I could actually make it through the show! I normally just get by on the 1GB card, but not for shooting RAW. I almost never shoot RAW so I have a lot to learn about what it can and can't do for you later when processing. I wonder Mary, what kind of software do you prefer for processing your RAW images? Digital photo Professional was recomended to me. Anyone else have suggestions?
